FIFA Suspends Argentina Players After 2026 World Cup Final Clash

FIFA SUSPENDS ARGENTINA PLAYERS AFTER 2026 WORLD CUP FINAL CLASH

FIFA Announces Punishments for Argentina Players After World Cup Final Incident

FIFA has imposed lengthy international suspensions and significant fines on several Argentina players following a post-match confrontation after their defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes received the most severe punishment. FIFA has suspended him for 10 international matches and fined him US$90,000 for his involvement in the incident.

Defender Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match international suspension and a US$90,000 fine, while midfielder Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension and was fined US$30,000.

Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also punished, receiving a three-match suspension and a US$30,000 fine.

Spain midfielder Gavi was sanctioned as well. He received a one-match suspension and a US$30,000 fine for his involvement in the confrontation.

Incident Followed Spain's World Cup Victory

The controversy occurred after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

Following the incident, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings based on a report submitted by its appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor.

The governing body subsequently reviewed the conduct of players and officials involved in the confrontation before announcing the sanctions.

Argentina Football Association Also Fined

The disciplinary action was not limited to individual players and officials.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was fined US$321,000 for several disciplinary breaches recorded during the tournament.

According to FIFA's ruling, the breaches included issues relating to team misconduct, discriminatory behaviour and the display of a political banner.

Argentina has also been ordered to play its next two home matches with stadium capacity limited to 50%. However, part of the stadium restriction has been suspended and will depend on compliance during a probationary period.

AFA Plans to Appeal FIFA Sanctions

The Argentine Football Association has indicated that it will request the full grounds for FIFA's decisions as it considers an appeal against the sanctions.

The punishments could have a significant impact on Argentina's squad planning for upcoming international fixtures, particularly because Paredes and Molina face lengthy bans.

The FIFA disciplinary decisions add another chapter to a controversial World Cup final that ended with Spain lifting the trophy after a narrow 1-0 victory over Argentina.
