The Success story of Nilufa - The Veteran Cake Designer and the Consequences of COVID-19

The research presented in this thesis is a case study that demonstrates one individual entrepreneur's route to success. After researching my chosen field of entrepreneurship, I created a case study aimed at motivating current and potential entrepreneurs. I'm doing this case study because it has the ability to help entrepreneurs who are struggling or scared to start their own enterprises. Each person has their own reasons for avoiding or quitting company projects. Nonetheless, I hope that by presenting this example, entrepreneurs will be inspired to learn from the successful business owners in their community. Giving people a real-life example of entrepreneurial success may inspire them to turn their fears or apprehensions into flourishing, passion-filled, world-changing enterprises, while simultaneously addressing the current crisis of COVID-19's influence and how to overcome it. People may then begin to perceive opportunities in a new light and begin to realize their full potential. I'll be looking into a company named The Deens Cakes for my case study. Deens Cakes is a ten-year-old company that designs and manufactures cakes and other culinary goods. This firm appealed to me because of the high quality of its products, its ideals, and the fact that it satisfied all my requirements. All of the fresh perimeter departments, including cake designers, have been affected by the COVID-19 epidemic both positively and negatively.

[Conversation between Nilufa and her husband Ameerdeen]
"Nilufa, I know this decision is hard for you, but think about all that you could have with that new life. This new chapter in your life will open up many more doors for your future! I know you’re worried about our child, but I would just hate to see you throw this aside because it’s difficult while I am here for you. And you know, I, and your mother, and all of your family want what is best for you, right? That’s why we have been encouraging you to start doing what you actually love to do. I guess the real question isn’t what do we think is best for your life, though what do you want to do with your life, Nilufa?”
"Deen, I never imagined having such a wonderful person in my life as you. I'd say you're a gift from God sent to me. Yes, like you said! I want to pursue what I love, which is, of course, to become a veteran cake designer. Deen! I want to create cakes that showcase the uniqueness of my talents. I want to spend the rest of my life baking cakes." With that Deen smiled, hugged his wife tightly, and stepped gently out of the room. Although, the look in her eyes and the determination in her voice told him that she was resolved about hesitation to start her career after marriage, he knew that Nilufa needed some space to think through what he had said. He gave her the rest of the day to think about her decision. Right then and there with tears in her eyes Nilufa made up her mind to find a way to make her cake business work. “I don’t know what I’ll do if this doesn’t work,” Nilufa said quietly to herself.
I’m going to make this work!

The Success Story Of Nilufa – The Veteran Cake Designer

A highly gifted lady set out on a quest ten years ago: to provide the people of Sri Lanka with an experience of pure excellent taste. She crafted mouthwatering wonderful cakes that were quickly the talk of the town, using only the best of carefully selected ingredients and her own exquisite, good taste. Everything she touched was converted into scrumptious mouthfuls of absolute bliss, from fluffy, golden cakes coated with creamy butter frosting to gooey, melt in the mouth chocolate creations. Her simple ambition to promote excellent taste far and wide has resulted in an awe-inspiring selection of delectable cakes, sweets, and other delicacies that continue to tantalize and mesmerize with each bite. Her creations are well-liked in the market because of their novelty, creativity, customization, and affordability. The unusual nature of the patterns and look, as well as the opportunity to customize them to our liking, making them more appealing and appropriate for the occasion. Yes, the story begins with the lady I've been characterizing up until this point, Nilufa Ameerdeen. Even before she started thinking about becoming a cake designer, she was a gifted person with a magical hand, I would say. While waiting to begin her A/Ls after passing her O/L examinations in 1999, she enrolled in a cooking class conducted by Biuroni Hapuarachi. Her family was not financially secure enough at the time to pay her class fee. Young, Nilufa was determined to gain the expertise that she desperately wanted to acquire. There was nothing that Nilufa was more passionate about than cake designing. So, Nilufa started doing classes for five to six girls in her neighborhood, and the money she made was used to pay her class fee. After finishing the cookery course, despite the difficulties and barriers she encountered along the way, she ended up placing first in practically every category of cake designing in the exhibition held at the end of the course.
(Exhibition Photos)
Her journey to become a cake designer kick started with her husband, Ameer Deen, who was there for her through her lowest points in life to the pinnacle of her career, which she acquired through hard work. Her husband offered her his entire support after they married in 2005, despite family disagreements over her continuing the baking lessons and doing cake orders. After having their kid, it became way more difficult for her to continue doing what she was doing, but the support she received from her mother-in-law was extremely supportive in encouraging her to continue making cakes orders.

She wasn't only interested in taking cake orders and going with the flow. She wanted to share her expertise with other girls who are eager to show themselves in what they love to accomplish. She began conducting courses and workshops for girls in Negombo and the surrounding area. Nilufa needed to be sufficiently qualified to instruct them and win their faith in what she taught them. So, Nilufa began her quest for qualification.

She needed to make herself highly qualified in order to be the expert and veteran cake designer. As a result, Nilufa began taking several Hotel Management courses in various specializations such as pastry and bakery, general cookery, and tourism. She also completed a one-year master's degree in hospitality management at BCAS Campus.

After becoming known as the "Queen of Cakes" in Negombo, she launched her own brand, The Deens Cakes, in 2020 with the help of her husband Ameerdeen.

Nilufa decided that if she wanted to grow, then she would have to find a more ideal location, so she moved to Dalupatha, where she now has all the facilities she requires for her business.

Nilufa quickly realized that, while having a physical location was crucial for their business, having an online presence was equally, if not more important in this age of technology. She created an online page for her Deens cakes on Facebook as well as Instagram, popular social media sites. Nilufa used Facebook and Instagram to help potential and present consumers establish a personal connection with the company. Now Nilufa could do anything with her master's degree from the BCAS Campus of Sri Lanka she acquired, her husband at her side, and a heart-centered profession front of her. Adventure was out there waiting for Nilufa.

Consequences of COVID-19 and Persistence of The Deens Cakes in Crisis Time

The COVID-19 outbreak has had an impact on all of the new periphery departments, including cake designers, both positively and negatively. The cake category, in particular, has suffered from changes in bakery and customer buying behaviors, as well as changes in department logistics. Also in contrast, People spent more time with their families during Covid-19, organizing smaller parties at home, and as a consequence purchased teatime favorites like our own label The Deens Cake's signature item Cheesecake in a range of flavors.

While the bakery is doing all possible to mitigate the impact of COVID-19, the pandemic has also prompted the bakery to bring back Cheesecakes in a variety of flavors for younger customers in the form of little portions of cake. During the outbreak, this proved to be the perfect decision, with these snack-size items a popular with the shop's customers, both elderly and young.

With the advent of COVID-19, Nilufa began to contemplate giving delivery service within a limited radius of her business. She gradually increased her sales by delivering cake orders to her clients (and leaving them at the door). People are attempting to stay at home these days. She was able to assist them stay at home while still supporting her business. Nilufa hasn't stopped there. While more customers are choosing to stay at home, many workers continue to work outside the home in essential industries. As a result, she began offering a drive-thru or curbside delivery option, which helps restrict her exposure as well as the consumers' while still serving their requirements.

Eventually, their Negombo business grew extremely successful that Nilufa employed her own students to help with the orders so that she and her husband could work in the back. The Deens Cakes brand flourishes both online and in-store. Nilufa simply wants to inspire women all across the world to be themselves and pursue their ambitions.

Writing this case study enlightened me the most about The Deens Cakes' journey to success. The writing of the case undoubtedly helped me to consolidate my findings, but it was the conduct of the interviews, the analysis of the transcription, and the building of the case's outline that revealed the answer to my hypothesis. Nilufa's personality, as a strong figure in the development and expansion of The Deens Cakes, I discovered, had a vital influence in the business's success. As evidenced by the case, The Deens Cakes transformed from a stress-relieving hobby to a booming popular company in just over two years.

The case writing process taught me that success in business is not about having a lot of money or getting a lot of money, because The Deens Cakes has developed from its inception to the current day totally on her own earnings from conducting classes. Entrepreneurial success does not occur because the individual happened to be born at a period of good fortune, which pushed the firm to develop. Success is not a luck; it is the result of choices. Every day, the entrepreneur must make choices, and who the individual is as a person influences those decisions.

From the day Nilufa decided she wanted to make cakes for the rest of her life till now, she has taken decisions for The Deens Cakes. Nilufa is persistent in her endeavors, curious, and willing to take chances. Although not a complete representation of her personality, these three traits motivated certain actions in her business and in her life in general. Nilufa was persistent in her job when she refused to allow the COVID-19 issue deter her from achieving her objectives. She embraced that as a challenge and used it to her best.
