The Iraqi city of Najaf is home to the largest and one of the world’s oldest cemeteries.
Known as the Valley of Peace, Wadi al Salaam contains around 6 million tombs and covers an area of more than 6 square kilometres. Making up around 13% of the total area of Najaf city, the cemetery resembles a huge historical city with generations of Iraqis buried there.
The ancient cemetery was established in the seventh century in close proximity to one of Prophet Muhammad’s (S.A.W) companions and son-in-laws, Ali (R.A).
