WHAT IS THIS NEW UPDATE ABOUT WHATSAPP PRIVACY SETTING CHANGE?

I'm seeing this thread of WhatsApp data privacy lately, and many people are concerned about what is actually happening. Let me make it simple, and not to be technical.

WhatsApp recently updated its privacy policy and mentioned that they capture some data from their users, and the data may be shared with Facebook and other companies under Facebook group, to give the user a better experience. In other words, they can make more money!

Below are the lists of what all 3 companies (WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal) collect about the user, and possibly sell them. You just prioritize what information of yours should be protected. Decide which app to use, based on your priorities.

WhatsApp Collects your:
- Device ID
- User ID
- Purchase History
- Location
- Phone Number
- Email Address
- Contacts
- Product Interaction
- Crash Data
- Performance Data
- Other Diagnostic Data
- Payment Info
- Customer Support
- Product Interaction
- Advertising Data
- Other User Content

The messages sent between users in WhatsApp are fully encrypted (E2EE) by default, and they cannot be read by anyone, even WhatsApp cannot read them. But WhatsApp knows, to whom you send messages. Also, note that the data backup you stored in WhatsApp servers/cloud is not encrypted and can be read by anyone who has access to it.

Telegram collects your:
- Contact Info
- Contacts
- User ID

In Telegram, the messages are NOT E2EE encrypted by default. But, if you use the Secret Chat feature, it is E2EE encrypted. No one can read those messages. But, Telegram has the ability to read your normal messages if they want. Telegram's desktop version does not have E2EE encryption, except the MacOS version on Apple computers

Signal:
- Nothing is collected. They don't even link our mobile number to our identity. SImply, they don't know anything about you.

Signal has E2EE encryption by default, and it cannot read any messages. Unlike WhatsApp, it cannot even see to whom you are sending the message.

NOTE: Not only WhatsApp and Facebook do this data business. There are so many other companies which do in our daily life (Ex: Google). We have to prioritize our level of privacy and select the appropriate product/service.
