The Sri Lankan government has chosen a method of further weakening the Muslim community, which is subject to repression and fear.
Amnesty International has urged the Sri Lankan government not to forget its obligation to treat all citizens equally.
Rehab Mahmour, Amnesty International's South Asia Regional Office's Communications and Propaganda Assistant, commented: A large number of people are scared due to the spread of corona virus.
Fears including coronavirus infection, the spread of the virus to others, seeing their loved ones suffer from the virus and facing their death have occurred among many. But for Sri Lankan Muslims, beyond the aforementioned fears, there are fears that their loved ones who die of coronavirus infection will not be buried and will not be given the final honor.
In a country where repression against minorities is practiced, the corpses of Muslims who have died of the corona virus are now denied permission to be buried according to their religious beliefs and their bodies are forcibly cremated, which has come as a shock to the Muslim community in Sri Lanka.
He said Muslims were unable to live in peace and fears of violence against them: the government was using the Covid-19 cause to ensure that even the death of Muslims would not be peaceful at present.
