Let there Be Light

Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating Visual, auditory or performing artworks, expressing the author's imaginative, conceptual idea, or technical skill. intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art.

'Let there be light' exhibition, a creative expression in art, photography, and film and words was held recently at Lionel Wendt Art Centre, Colombo. Artist, curator and benefactor, Chandrika Maelge of the exhibition, explains that last year during morning prayers the Lord planted a word in her heart "Do another exhibition next year, I will send you the artists. You will be the blessing!" The theme given was 'Let there be light'. In obedience to the word she had embarked on this mission.

'Let there be light' are the first words spoken by God (Genesis 1:3). The backbone of the exhibition was inspired by this word. On these note artists, Kesara Ratnavibhushana, Aamina Nizar and Chandrika Maelge have portrayed their personal interpretation of 'Let there be light'. In addition, they have collectively put together collections for; 'Let There Be Light in Your Thinking', 'Bloom Like The Lotus' and 'The Beauty of Sun and Moon Light'.

In the perspective of the history of art. artistic works have existed for almost as long as humankind. From early prehistoric art to contemporary art; however, some theories restrict the concept of "artistic works" to modern Western societies. One early sense of the definition of art is closely related to the older Latin meaning, which roughly translates to "skill" or "craft," as associated with words such as "artisan." English words derived from this meaning include artifact, artificial, artifice, medical arts, and military arts. However, there are many other colloquial uses of the word, all with some relation to its etymology.

The oldest documented forms of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or objects in fields including today's painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media Sculptures, cave paintings, rock paintings and petroglyphs.

from the Upper Paleolithic dating to roughly 40,000 years ago have been found, but the precise meaning of such art is often disputed because so little is known about the cultures that produced them.

The oldest art objects in the world - a series of tiny, drilled snail shells about 75,000 years old were discovered in a South African cave. Containers that may have been used to hold paints have been found dating as far back as 100,000 years. Etched shells by Homo erectus from 430,000 and 540,000 years ago were discovered in 2014.

Hilusha Hewagama's Video Art Short Film titled 'Arise' was made especially for this exhibition 'Let there be light'. To add variety Nuzaifa Hussain has coined some creative thoughts on each of the art ists take on 'Let there be light'. "Light dispels darkness. It warms everything. It has the greatest speed. Art is a great influencer. Art speaks. Art evokes emotion. The exhibition planted seeds of light through art," says Maelge.
